If anyone’s going to tell coronavirus what’s what, it’s Brian Blessed

Brian Blessed made a typically animated appearance on Lorraine today – and managed to speak for the nation in the process.

The 83-year-old was appearing on the morning news programme to celebrate the 40th anniversary of cult classic Flash Gordon, in which he played Prince Vultan.

And he was willing to make his feelings crystal clear about the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“We are living in strange times,” he told giggling host Christine Lampard via video call. “This Covid virus, I really want to say one swear word, b***** off!

“We will beat it. It will go away. I believe in the human spirit and we are showing immense courage in this country.”

The acting legend also acknowledged the hard work of the NHS and thanked them for helping his wife Hildegard Neil recover from her cancer scare.

Blessed himself is still continuing to keep up his own fitness routine in lockdown in order to keep on adventuring in the future.

“Marvellous things have been happening in the lockdown. It’s been an extraordinary year,” he said.

“I train every day, not out of vanity but so I can do the expeditions I want to do. I bench press 300lbs, I do five mile runs.

“We are the children of stardust, yearning for the stars. The earth needs to rest. We’ve got to get out there.”

While the star acknowledged that there is still a lot of love out there for Flash Gordon, Blessed is against the recent trend of remaking classic films updated for a modern audience.

“Everywhere I go, people are always telling me to say Gordon’s alive! Flash Gordon is such a brilliant film. It had brilliant actors and such great music by Queen,” he said.

“They must leave this alone because the music is right, acting is right, the cast is right. It’s got a wonderful comic book style. It’s perfect.

“If anyone wants to make another one, I’ll smack them straight in the gob.”

Lorraine continues weekdays from 9am on ITV
