Channel 5 will reportedly push back the Big Brother start date back to avoid a clash with ITV2's Love Island.

Last year, the two shows – although very different – launched on the same night in June, with the ITV2 show going on to enjoy runaway success over the summer.

The two shows rarely clashed in the listings but Big Brother’s ratings paled in comparison to Love Island’s – something bosses are reportedly keen to avoid this year.

A source told the Daily Star: “Love Island did so well last year that there is a fear Big Brother will be lost in its shadow too much.

“In some ways it makes sense to launch later,” they added.

Channel 5 have been contacted for comment.

Success of the summer Love Island, presented by Caroline Flack and narrated by Iain Stirling, was won by Amber Davies and Kem Cetinay last year with other names including Chris Hughes and Olivia Atwood becoming stars from the Majorcan villa.

Big Brother, meanwhile, had its own share of drama last summer with two housemates, Kayleigh Morris and Lotan Carter, removed for “aggressive behaviour” and other housemates choosing to leave the house during the show.

The series was won by Isabelle Warburton, shortly before the Celebrity version kicked off eventually won by Sarah Harding.

It was recently revealed by the channel executives that Big Brother will not return “in its current form” after its contract with the network expires this year .

It is thought that the money will be used elsewhere for other programming.
