BBC Breakfast’s Mike Bushell received an early wake-up call after being dunked in an ice bath on live TV.

The broadcaster was rendered speechless as he submerged himself in the cold water alongside hockey player Susannah Townsend at the English Institute of Sport.

“It’s really painful,” he stammered as the freezing temperature caused him to catch his breath. “I can’t speak, seriously.”

Townsend told him: “You have to get through the two minute marker.”

Seeing he was struggling with the bath, she offered a few words of advice, adding: “You’re submerging your whole body. I’m a bit more intelligent and stay out of the water a little bit more.”

Unable to conduct the interview and clearly in pain, Bushell looked happy to wrap up the chat after the GB hockey player had explained the benefits.

“You’ve convinced me, although I’ve never been happier to hand back to the studio,” he said. I’m not staying here for ten minutes. Please don’t ask me another question. I’m getting out.”

Show anchors Dan Walker and Louise Minchin were left in hysterics as they watched their co-presenter struggling.

But Bushell’s pain didn’t stop there as he then slipped as he attempted to reposition himself in the bath.

“I’ve had the most amazing experience joining Susanna from the GB hockey team in the ice bath,” he said before slipping and letting out a shriek as he tried to stop himself from sliding into the water for a second time.
