It’s been a while since Bodyguard left us with a gritty-drama shaped void in our Sunday night schedule.

But, luckily for us, BBC One finally has our next obsession primed and ready to go in the form of Baptiste.

A spin-off from hugely popular The Missing, Baptiste focuses on the titular detective Julien Baptiste who was a firm favourite with viewers.

Another sure-to-be-hit from Harry and Jack Williams, here is everything you need to know:

What is Baptiste about?

The six-part series, with Baptiste at its heart, sees the detective thrown into the middle of a case to find missing girl Natalie, the niece of a well-respected Englishman called Edward Stratton.

Although set in Amsterdam, it is believed that Natalie’s case extends a lot further afield with a link to a Romanian sex trafficking gang.

Baptiste soon finds himself engulfed in mystery as nobody wants to talk about the missing girl – although plenty want to throw him off the scent.

But as the case consumes all of the insightful detective’s time, he takes his eye off his family who are soon in grave danger. Celia, his wife, is being followed, suddenly leaving Baptiste with two pressing problems to deal with.

Who is in the cast?

Tchéky Karyo is reprising his role as Julien Baptiste, who was last seen about to undergo brain surgery to remove a tumour in The Missing. He’s fit and healthy in his dedicated spin-off – although it is unknown if this is a prequel or a sequel – and ready to turn his hand to any case.

The Night Manager’s Tom Hollander stars as Edward Stratton, Anastasia Hille is Celia Baptiste and Jessica Raine is Genevieve, an Interpol officer.

What did the BBC say about the drama?

Controller Piers Wenger hailed the central character as “one of the greatest Williams’ brothers creations”.

He said: “Julien Baptiste - played by the exceptional Tchéky Karo - is one of the Williams brothers’ greatest creations and utterly deserving of his own show.

"This first series of Baptiste will allow us to discover more about Julien than ever before as he is parachuted into the centre of a shocking and wide-ranging crime story.”

When is it on?

Baptiste starts tonight at 9pm on BBC One. Episodes will be available on iPlayer shortly after.
