The coveted Paul Hollywood handshake has been ‘devalued’ according to Great British Bake Off fans who were left fuming after he dished out three in one round.

The TV chef angered viewers by going overboard with his praise during Tuesday night’s signature challenge.

The remaining bakers were tasked with creating steamed school puddings to kick off pudding week – and Hollywood was going rogue with the praise.

On judging the bakes he gave handshakes to Yan, Steven and Stacey, who won the challenge with her steamed berry Bakewell tart.

But viewers weren’t as impressed and branded the act “worthless” while some joked that he must be getting commission from Channel 4 for every handshake he dishes out.

One fan tweeted: “Christ! Calm the f*** down Paul! #GBBO.”

Another wrote: “Paul Hollywoods C4 #gbbo contract stipulates he gets £10k for every 'hollywood' handshake dished out! They used 2 mean sumthin! #likesweets.”

Supermarket chain Aldi saw an opportunity to win praise from Hollywood, tweeting: “We're plotting how to get a Paul Hollywood handshake. Perhaps we could tempt him with our Lemon Dessert Pud? #GBBO.”

Liam was left disappointed after he failed to bag the fourth Hollywood handshake of the challenge.

The student baking enthusiast served up a stodgy pudding.

Critiquing his attempt, Hollywood said: “It’s too stodgy. You’ve probably mixed it too much and the gluten’s got quite powerful and that’s why I couldn’t give you a handshake.”

This week's technical challenge saw the contestants tasked with making six chocolate puddings filled with peanut butter. The showstopper required a custard and jelly making abilities for a trifle.
