Alan Carr is more than ready to front a full series of Play Your Cards Right.

The 43-year-old comedian is hosting his very own version of Bruce Forsyth’s classic quiz show as part of Epic Gameshow, which will see him bring back a number of well-loved formats of the past.

The first show - which airs tonight - sees Carr channel his inner Bruce as he revives Play Your Card Right, which he said was one of the most fun to film.

“You never know but I would love Play Your Cards Right to be commissioned for a full series,” he told Standard Online and other reporters.

“I love simple quiz shows, I can deal with simple. These formats have stood the test of time. It wasn’t complicated, it was nice and it gives you a warm fuzzy feeling. Now, lots of quiz shows have heartbeat music and lots of lighting changes.

“Sometimes some of these game shows just make you feel thick. If you look at 15 to One, I don’t even understand the words, let alone the question.

“This is something you can play along with all your family, and no-one’s going to feel stupid.”

He added jokingly: “While we’re all locked in with coronavirus, Play Your Cards Right is perfect telly. There’s the headline.”

Carr said that he found himself accidentally channelling the late Forsyth as he was hosting the classic programme.

“I found myself saying, good game, good game and didn’t they do well?” he said. “And I kept thinking, oh no, not only am I doing his show, I’m taking the p*** out of it as well.

“But it’s not me being rude, we’ve just all watched him so many times that it’s just in our blood.”

And while the show pretty much follows the exactly the same format of the classic Play Your Cards Right, they have been given a 21st century polish.

“They’ve had a bit of an update and a bit of a jshush,” he said. “But there’s enough retro for everyone. I think people are going to like it.”

Alan Carr's Epic Gameshow begins Saturday May 30 at 8.15pm on ITV
