Will Harry find Sally?

Is this a good idea? Luke Perry, best known for television's Beverly Hills 90210, will star in the stage adaptation of the hit movie When Harry Met Sally, in the West End early next year.

James Tod, the producer who secured the theatrical rights to Nora Ephron's screenplay, and who has spent a lot of money, time and effort in assembling a director, a theatre and one lead actor, sure hopes it is.

The producers of The Graduate made piles of cash with the stage version of the classic movie starring Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft. So I guess Mr Tod could get lucky, too.

The movie When Harry Met Sally starred Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan as two people looking for love in New York.

First, they hate each other, then they like each other, then they realise that it's love, actually.

The movie came out 14 years ago and became an instant hit.

The chemistry between the stars was lovely ( costars Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby were fun as well) and Ms Ephron's story seemed to connect with audiences. It's a dangerous thing to tamper with a beloved film, but Mr Tod insists that the stage adaptation by award-winning dramatist Marcy Kahan works.

'Nora Ephron read it and has approved it,' he declares. 'It's all about the dialogue - the humour and emotion is all there in what Harry and Sally say to each other.

'I was watching the DVD and I thought: "This feels like a great piece for the theatre." I went out and got the rights and now we've got a show.'

Casting director Debbie McWilliams has set up several meetings for Mr Perry to read with potential Sallys.

'The chemistry is so important,' says Mr Tod.

They will also require the most delicate of comic touches. Tod has hired director Loveday Ingram to ensure the play has the correct lightness of touch.

One of the film's celebrated scenes - the one in the deli where the old lady says 'I'll have what she's having' after witnessing Sally's fake orgasm - will be replicated for the stage.

'We couldn't leave that out,' Mr Tod told me.

The show will open at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket in the West End on February 20.
