What's up, Tiger Lillies?

10 April 2012

Macabre cabaret group the Tiger Lillies provide a night of malevolent parodies and outrageous burlesque, while Jo Brand and Al Murray do their stand-up shows and a solo performer finds humour in the Holocaust...

The Tiger Lillies
Soho Theatre, W1

One of those great uncategorisable shows, this cabaret combo is part comedy, part-music, part-theatre. Having won cult status providing the music for the London production of gothic fairy tale Shockheaded Pete, accordionist Martyn Jacques and his macabre mates return for a gig in their own right, putting the emphasis on malevolent parodies and outrageous burlesque. Tim Burton would love them. (0870 429 6883) Until 3 June, 9.30pm.

Jo Brand
Beck Theatre, Hayes

The famous cake-loving comic is making a name for herself these days as a novelist, with two books already under her belt. But Brand started as a stand-up twenty years ago and she still keeps match-fit with low-key provincial tours - this is about as close as she will be getting to the West End this year. Expect well-honed gags about Trinny, Susannah, motherhood and bra-burning. (020 8561 8371). Thurs 18, 8pm.

Punch Me In The Stomach
The Drill Hall, WC2

Is it possible to find humour in the Holocaust? Performer Deb Filler has a good bash in this solo show that has already had an acclaimed run off-Broadway. In this intriguing, provocative autobiographical piece Filler draws inspiration from the extended family she lost in WW2 and tells the tale of her father's traumatic trip from Auschwitz to New Zealand. (020 7307 5060). Sat 20-Sun 21 May, then weekends until 4 June, Sat 8pm, Sun 4pm.

Al Murray: The Pub Landlord
Lyric Theatre, W1

The second and final West End date for Al Murray's brilliantly bilious comic monster. The Pub Landlord has been around for twelve years now and is still serving foaming flagons of Little Englander prejudice. Highlights of this current show include a panto-style broadside against the Euro - "Back off Brussels" - and his boozy but infectious World Cup singalong entitled It Was Our Idea (Football Was Our Idea). (020 7494 5045) Sun 21 May, 7.30pm.

The Empire Strikes Black 3
Hackney Empire

A top-quality showcase of black British talent, ranging from TV star Richard Blackwood to club favourite Felix Dexter, who is one of the people behind the phone-in characters on the current R4 cult show Down The Line with Gary Bellamy. Plus Hackney favourite Angie Le Mar, BBC London motormouth Eddie Nestor, groundbreaking Curtis Walker and many more. (020 8985 2424) Sun 21 May, 7.30pm.
