You certainly cannot fault Chris Green's work ethic. While others are wringing the last laughs from their Edinburgh 2003 sets he has created a mainly new show for his cult character, rhinestone cowgirl Tina C.
Just Doing It For The Love has already been a hit in Australia and now it is Soho's turn to join Tennessee's Mother Theresa as she attempts to put a sticking plaster of song over the world's wounds.
There are plenty of entertaining moments. Tina looks fantastic, from the stetson to the vertiginous heels. Green has a pair of endless legs that a catwalk of supermodels would die for.
However, this is not enough to persuade a half-full theatre to indulge in a mass group hug on a wet Monday night. And, more importantly, the music is uneven.
Unlike Marie Osmond, Tina is a little bit country and a little bit everything else, from rock and roll to funkified Puccini.
The Nashville spoofs do have an undeniably comic kick. It is difficult to parody a genre that has produced genuine gems such as They Ain't Making Jews Like Jesus Any More, but
Tina has a good bash with I Became Schizophrenic So I Could Love You Twice As Much.
Julian Clary's pianist Russell Churney is a nicely passive foil, wandering off when unwanted, as on the anti-Bush showstopper, Shock and Awe.
Overall though, there are too many missed chances. The draggy diva's announcement of plans to run for President, although a joke, ought to be a cue for much more than a glib ditty which basically says "I'm a celebrity, vote for me".
The result is a fun if flimsy hour. Tina could be thrusting a satirical stiletto into the body politic, but ends up merely scratching the surface.
