The West End in 2015 had its share of blockbuster moments.

Benedict Cumberbatch caused mayhem both on and off stage in a decidedly uneven production of Hamlet, Kenneth Branagh began his season of Shakespeare at the Garrick, treating London audiences to the likes of Dame Judi Dench and Zoe Wanamaker.

Nicole Kidman took time out from being a Hollywood superstar to return to the stage after 17 years in an award-winning turn in Photograph 51, while fellow heavyweight James McAvoy was named best actor for his part in the Ruling Class. Meanwhile, Poirot himself, David Suchet, cut a dash at the Vaudeville as Oscar Wilde’s redoubtable Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest. The West End wasn’t only a spot for sighting celebrities.

Above are ten highlights of the year, chosen by Evening Standard critics Henry Hitchings and Fiona Mountford. They are in no particular order.
