Young American Kyle Soller pipped his wife, Phoebe Fox, to be named outstanding newcomer at the

Actress Anna Chancellor hailed his "unique charisma" in The Glass Menagerie and Government Inspector at the Young Vic and The Faith Machine at the Royal Court. But Soller, 28, said he would not have been able to do it without his wife, who gave him a giant hug when his name was announced.

Raising his award, he said: "I'm going to split this when I get home. Phoebe, half of this is for you."

He added: "I came here for London theatre, to get the best training that I could. But Phoebe is the reason that I stayed."

Fox was nominated for her performances in As You Like It, The Acid Test and There Is A War.

The other contenders were Malachi Kirby and David Wilson Barnes.
