Sex in the suburbs

Myanna Buring and Simon Quaterman as Ryan and Kelly star in Seduced
10 April 2012

Sex, power and class entwine and get irritatingly knotted in Seduced.

Michael Kingsbury's new play sees what happens when young, lower-class Ryan and Kelly join affluent fortysomethings Matthew and Naomi for dinner and wife-swapping.

It's fun, sexy drama, the more so thanks to two superb performances from Myanna Buring and Simon Quaterman as Ryan and Kelly.

But as their stay grows more extended, Kingsbury's attempts to develop themes of class exploitation feel forced.

Whether Ryan and Kelly are interlopers or genuinely seduced by a better lifestyle is kept ambiguous to the point where character consistency fails.

In the end, the dramatic potential of the silly scenario seems exhausted some time before the end.
