Goodness Gracious Me’s Sanjeev Bhaskar is the latest star to lend his support to a fundraising campaign for a new home for the Ovalhouse theatre.

The actor and comic, pictured above with the brick he has sponsored, got his big break when he performed The Secret Asians show with Nitin Sawhney at the venue in 1995. He has backed its Buy A Brick campaign launched to help raise some of the £2 million needed to make a move from Oval to Brixton.

Other alumni of the fringe venue, which dates back to the Sixties, including Bond star Pierce Brosnan, have backed the campaign which has raised £6.5 million to go with £3 million from Arts Council England.

Bhaskar, 52, said: “A lot of the characters I was doing here I then did in Goodness Gracious Me, so I absolutely think that one did lead to the other. “Everyone gets worried about kids on the streets and them having nowhere to go, and having something like this brings young people in and gives them a focus that isn’t tied to school or family.”

Details about the scheme can be found at ovalhouse.com
