Moss captures teen angst

The actors in Christmas Is Miles Away look too old.

Promising young playwright Chloë Moss takes as her theme that awkward, exhilarating time between the ages of 16 and 18. For teenagers Christie and Luke, the reassuring security of camping trips and cans of beer has papered over the fact that these boy-men now have precious little in common.

Or so it would appear, as posturing Luke finds his refrain of "You're all right" useless in the face of Christie's grief about his late father. Julie, Christie's new girlfriend, looks to be the emotionally literate audience he craves.

Moss, however, is too skilled to follow such well-trodden paths, even if she is prone to meander. As the boys' lives diverge, Moss cleverly has the art student and the soldier begin to display the characteristics that might be associated with the other career.

All three actors - David Judge, Paul Stocker and Georgia Taylor - look too old and are hampered by an awkward set. Nonetheless, they neatly capture the touching insecurity of adolescence, with Stocker in particular digging deep as Luke.
