More Crazy Paola, less Serge wanted

Youthful memories: Holly Atkins as Paola and Anthony Schuster as Raymond
10 April 2012

The Ballad of Crazy Paola is an intriguing little piece from Flemish playwright Arne Sierens, in which two adults squabble over fragments of youthful memories.

In her hedonistic past, Paola dated rock musician Serge; now his half‑brother is giving her teenage son drum lessons. Reminiscences of rock heroes can be tedious, however, and frustratingly the unseen Serge dominates the dialogue, when we’d rather discover more about the life choices and chances of grown-up Paola and Raymond, attractively played by Holly Atkins and Anthony Shuster.
