2015 may have had its fair share of highlights, but 2016 looks to be a dazzling year on the West End and beyond, says David Ellis

If it only did one thing, 2015 showed that London's theatre is in rude health, and has serious pulling power with the stars.

Benedict Cumberbatch, James McAvoy, Nicole Kidman and Dame Judi Dench are just some of the big names who trod the boards over the past 12 months, but the year ahead looks to have more than its fair share of big names: Ralph Fiennes, Adrian Lester, Kenneth Branagh and Timothy Spall are all set to appear.

It isn't just big name actors who'll be drawing in the crowds: some of theatre's finest directors will be putting out work this year, including Sir David Hare, Robert Icke and Hamlet director Lyndsey Turner

Big names aside, this year will offer a mix of loud musicals, serious plays and a few in-betweens. The Caretaker, Faith Healer and The Entertainer are all being revived, but they'll be competing with the likes of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Aladdin the Musical and, it's expected, Finding Neverland.
