Going the extra mile

Nadine McBay|Metro10 April 2012

In August 2002, Stephen Soans-Wade attempted - unsuccessfully - to get sectioned under the Mental Health Act, telling healthcare staff he was 'going to push somebody under a bus or a train'. Weeks later, he pushed Christophe Duclos off the platform at Mile End Tube station to his death.

Three years in development, this striking production from London collective Analogue is not a straight dramatisation of those events but a haunting, stylishly executed consideration of human freedom.

Two men's lives are disrupted: Alex (Sam Taylor) believes he's foretelling events in his dreams, while Michael (Liam Jarvis) suspects his neighbour's out for his blood.

As their respective delusions seep in to their everyday lives, ominous events culminate in their 'chance' meeting on an Underground platform.

Influencing proceedings are faceless figures in black, who act as stage hands modifying Tom Kilner's ingenious set and contemporary takes on The Fates.

Supplementing dialogue with an elegant braid of movement, music and animation, Mile End often flows with a hypnotic magical realism more associated with the cinema.

Though Analogue's multi-stranded approach may disorientate, this is neuron-firing, emotionally hot-wired theatre.
