Amanda's new image

This is Amanda Holden as you've never seen her.

The Cutting It star was in full Twenties costume to launch the West End musical Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Holden plays the title role of the feisty flapper, a part made famous by Julie Andrews in the Oscarwinning 1967 film of the same name.

She revealed her desire to take on the role after emerging from her failed marriage to entertainer Les Dennis. "The last 18 months have made me a stronger, tougher person," she said. "I was strong before but now I'm doubly strong."

Holden, 32, who turns redhead for the role, said she was instantly attracted to the part of Millie Dillmount, who leaves her home in Kansas to search out a wealthy husband in Twenties Manhattan.

"She is a very forwardthinking girl for her time, very independent and feisty," Holden said. "She sets out to find herself a rich husband because she thinks that is the be-all and end-all, and will make her life complete. But she eventually realises that true love has nothing to do with money."

Thoroughly Modern Millie is already a hit on Broadway. It is due to open at the Shaftesbury Theatre on 1 October with a cast which includes Maureen Lipman.

Holden had to fly to New York for her audition in front of 12 producers and executives, an experience she described as "the most terrifying thing I have ever had to do". Her dream is to transfer to Broadway.

Producer Paul Elliott, who recommended Holden for the part, said: "I have no doubt she will do what Denise Van Outen did with Chicago: go over there and knock their socks off."
