Sam Jay review: Sex and satire from Boston's rising star

Boston’s Sam Jay is on a roll. She has recently had a Netflix showcase, released a hip-hop comedy album and received an Emmy nomination for her Saturday Night Live writing. Her UK debut offers an enjoyable live taste of this versatile rising star.

Sex talk dominated the first half of her set, which had a loose stand-up club feel.

Jay is gay but previously had relationships with men. She recalls bumping into an old flame, who wonders if he prompted her sexuality switch. It is not that simple, of course, and there is an impressive pay-off to the story.

She was strong on feminism and racism, suggesting, for example, that a white man can purchase an entire serial killer kit without raising suspicion, while a black man might prompt police interest buying batteries. Jay was just as happy, however, to chat about alien abduction, Apple’s Genius Bar, incontinence or why she rejects dieting: “In America there will always be a fatter person.”

Her material was a little too wide-ranging to build momentum, but she clearly has something. Her girlfriend, laughing loudly from the wings, certainly appreciated it. Ticket-buying fans of smut and satire will too.
