Raw rock sound: Pretty Vicious
David Smyth17 April 2015

Life is on fast-forward for this teenage quartet from Merthyr Tydfil, who only got together just over a year ago and signed with Virgin EMI Records after a major label scrum in January.

Not to be confused with the pretty awful US rock group The Pretty Reckless, Pretty Vicious look like the band to follow Catfish and the Bottlemen out of darkest Wales into the biggest venues.

Theirs is a raw indie rock sound that recalls the excitement of early Arctic Monkeys, especially on the savage chanting of their first recording, Cave Song. The latest one, It’s Always There, is even rougher around the edges, hammering the ears at a hundred miles-an-hour. It can be snapped up as a seven-inch for Record Store Day this Saturday.

Indie rock isn’t often delivered with this much energy by snotty kids who look like they should be hanging around outside the corner shop begging you to buythem booze. All we need now is for Noel Gallagher to say he likes them and the stage is set.
