Virtually famous: Fufanu

It’s still early days for Reykjavik trio Fufanu, who not long ago had a name change, demoting themselves from Captain Fufanu, and switched from making techno to menacing post-punk. But the band have had a bit of a head start before their mighty first single, the glowering, seven-minute Circus Life, comes out early next month.

Singer Kaktus Einarsson is the son of Einar Örn, who formed The Sugarcubes with Björk, making him rock royalty in Iceland. That connection led Iceland enthusiast Damon Albarn to prick up his ears early on – one of the band’s first London gigs was supporting Albarn at the Albert Hall last November, and they’ll be on the bill for Blur’s Hyde Park show this summer too. This isn’t nepotism though – Kaktus is a star.

I caught the band at last autumn’s Iceland Airwaves festival at a disastrous show in which nothing worked, and he was gripping to watch throughout. Now there are a raft of London support slots before Blur in the park, including a date with The Vaccines. Don’t miss.
