Virtually famous: Calpurnia

David Smyth29 March 2018

Seeing as he played nerdy Dungeons & Dragons enthusiast Mike in the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, it’s certainly strange to see Finn Wolfhard wielding a guitar and fronting a rock and roll band.

Now a floppy-haired 15-year-old, in his latest screen appearance he can be seen mucking about in a recording studio with his three young Calpurnia bandmates in the lo-fi video for their debut single, City Boy.

It’s a laid-back, drawled indie rock song whose lyrics sound like they were knocked off on the bus to school, but the raw feel has considerable charm. It’s not a million miles from the languid sound of slacker rock king Mac DeMarco, with whom Calpurnia now share a record label.

There’s also a fiery gear change near the close that suggests they could head towards louder things on subsequent material. Cadien Lake from the band Twin Peaks is producing a debut EP due in the summer, when we’ll get a better idea of whether this can be more than a hobby between star roles.
