From his 13 years as the frontman of British psychedelic rock band Oceansize and as a touring member of endlessly inventive rock behemoths Biffy Clyro, Mike Vennart certainly knows his way around an emotional, complex tune.
The self-confessed music obsessive is now flying solo as Vennart, launching his debut album The Demon Joke later this year – a ten-track opus of madness and joy that comes from a singular, focused vision.
“There’s moments of beauty but also lots of weird noises and things that are designed to irritate people,” Vennart says of the album. “I’m very happy with the way it’s turned out.”

A shape-shifting ballad full of the twists and confounding time signatures that fans of both Oceansize and Biffy have come to expect, the song holds an integral place on Vennart’s forthcoming LP.
“Don’t Forget The Joker is pretty much the centre piece of the album, certainly from a lyrical standpoint,” Vennart explains. “It's different to the rest of the material, in that it sounds drunk, half-played and slurred, which is kind of what the words are about.”
