TLC – TLC review: ‘One of the year’s great comebacks’

some tracks may be among the best things they’ve done
New album: TLC by TLC

Fifteen years on from the sudden death of Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, TLC are back with a self-titled album that’s billed as their last. They were the biggest US girl group in the Nineties, though their return as a duo is low-key in comparison.

Financed online via Kickstarter, TLC promised to “stay true to the TLC sound”. It turns out that scattershot sound suits these modishly retro times.

Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas switch effortlessly from rumbling R&B (Scandalous) and uplifting disco (It’s Sunny) to the soulful balladry of Start a Fire and hip-hop nostalgia of Way Back, featuring Snoop Dogg.

The defiant No Introduction addresses past glories, while the majestic American Gold may be among the best things they’ve done.

TLC’s swansong is one of the year’s great comebacks.
