Newcastle rocker Sam Fender has fuelled speculation on the announcement of his third studio album, ahead of his performances in the city this weekend.

The North Shields singer will perform at Newcastle United’s St James’ Park grounds on June 9-10, and is likely to receive a hero’s welcome at his homecoming shows.

Fender was originally only set to perform one date at the famous Magpies ground, but with the announcement sending Ticketmaster into overdrive, and quickly selling out, an additional date was added, now also sold out.

The rumour mill has been rife for the upcoming shows, with advertisements across Newcastle adding fuel to the fire of an imminent album announcement.

Billboards appearing around the city show three Newcastle United shirts labelled Fender 1, 2 and 4, two of which are accompanied by the names of his previous albums, Hypersonic Missiles and Seventeen Going Under; the third shirt sits next to a QR code which takes fans to his website, where they can sign up for updates on new music, merchandise and shows.

The Fender 3 shirt has already caught buzz on social media, with the Newcastle native trending ahead of his two headline slots.

Fans are already getting excited about the prospect of new Sam Fender music. One tweeted: “SJP might be the best day of my life”.

Another tweeted: “finally something good this year”.

Fender has added a number of up and coming talents to support him for his St James’ Park concerts; the singer will be joined by likes of Holly Humberstone, Inhaler, Hector Gannett, Ernie and Wunderhorse.

The show seems to be shrouded in secrecy, with a mystery set-list in the works also fuelling speculation that Fender may be planning on bringing extra special guests along with him, including, it is rumoured, one of his boyhood football heroes, Magpies legend Alan Shearer.

Images have been circulating on social media of the stage being built – one featuring an image of Fender, an avid Newcastle United fan, with a black and white electric guitar.
