His stage has been graced by legends from Jimi Hendrix to Nina Simone and Van Morrison — and now jazz great Ronnie Scott has been honoured with a blue plaque on the original site of the nightclub bearing his name.

The musician, who died in 1996, opened his first club at 39 Gerrard Street in Soho in 1959, which was its home for six years until it moved to its current site in nearby Frith Street. The club celebrates its 60th anniversary at the end of this month.

His widow Mary said: “Ronnie received many accolades during his lifetime. Each time he would chuckle with pleasure, feeling honoured, a little mystified and humbled.

“The English Heritage blue plaque is the well-deserved jewel in the crown of recognition for his lifetime contribution to jazz. I am grateful to have lived long enough to see this happen and am overjoyed and honoured to be a part of the celebration.”
