Phronesis / Julian Argüelles / Frankfurt Radio Big Band – The Behemoth review: ‘impressive’

Jazz trio revisit their back catalogue with new arrangements of their top tunes
Mighty: jazz trio Phronesis revisit their biggest hits with Julian Argüelles and the Frankfurt Radio Big Band

The Scandinavian/British trio Phronesis have been tearing up jazz stages for a decade now, finding new routes through their music and reimagining a back catalogue of tunes as mercurial as they are groove-laden.

This anniversary commission sees conductor and former Loose Tubes saxophonist Julian Argüelles rearranging ten of the trio’s top tunes in cahoots with the Frankfurt Radio Big Band, a collaboration that won plaudits when performed live at the 2015 EFG London Jazz Festival and is similarly impressive here.

The likes of ‘Stillness’ by double bassist Jasper Hoiby and ‘OK Chorale’ by pianist Ivo Neame are lent added depth by audacious ensemble vamps, virtuoso solos on trumpet and guitar and muscular surround sound by one of the most intuitive big bands going. Mighty.
