Madeon - Good Faith review: A prodigious producer still finding his voice

Harry Fletcher15 November 2019

French DJ and producer Madeon was 17 when he went viral with Pop Culture – an infectious dance track constructed solely from samples of 39 hit songs. In the eight years since, he’s rubbed shoulders with EDM’s heavyweights and diversified as a producer. But where Pop Culture was all about ripping up old ideas to create something fresh, his second album Good Faith is lacking in originality by comparison.

The new collection opens with glitchy gospel choir samples, giving way to slow jam Dream Dream Dream. Like the rest of the album, it’s saturated in autotune – enough to put T-Pain to shame – with the DJ using his voice more like a synth.

All My Friends is the kind of wide-screen pop tailor-made for summer road trips, but this collection of smooth-edged, pop-centric dance tunes feels a little dated at times – Be Fine grooves along nicely enough, but feels like a throwback to the house-inflected chart music of the late 00s.

He’s been a sought-after name in the industry for years now, with credits on tracks by Lady Gaga, Coldplay and Two Door Cinema Club, but Good Faith is the sound of a talented producer still finding his own voice.
