Mac DeMarco - This Old Dog, review: ‘A selection of unhurried, sun-dappled songs’

New record: Mac DeMarco releases This Old Dog
Rick Pearson5 May 2017

Mac DeMarco is a Canadian singer-songwriter whose chameleon-like qualities have led to comparisons with Damon Albarn and Beck.

The 27-year-old moved to LA to pen his third album and you can hear the city’s influence in this selection of unhurried, sun-dappled songs.

Beautiful melodies abound, particularly on Dreams From Yesterday, which has echoes of Don McLean’s classic Vincent.

Elsewhere, One More Love Song’s jazz-rock nods to Steely Dan, while album closer Watching Him Fade Away flickers like a faulty neon sign.

Once more, this is not the stuff of mainstream success; rather an understated gem.
