Kylie Minogue review: Unapologetically cheesy, but still so endearing

After dominating the British pop charts for three decades, next weekend Kylie Minogue will finally play a full solo set at Glastonbury.

Her intimate performance at Hampton Court Palace last night felt like the perfect warm-up for her Sunday evening legends slot — only with more deckchairs and picnic baskets than you usually see at the Pyramid Stage.

The 51-year-old Australian singer rolled back the years as she moved energetically through her back catalogue, singing bawdy bops including On A Night Like This with an addictive electricity.

She can be unapologetically cheesy — she sang her Robbie Williams duet Kids while punching the air — but this is what makes her so endearing. In an era of singles that are more concerned with being woke than making you spin around, Kylie — who knows her songs are designed to make you move first and think second — felt like a welcome tonic.

Some of the routines seemed a little dated but this nostalgic show was so full of joy that the audience was too busy dancing to notice any of its blemishes.

In what was essentially a greatest hits set, one of the best moments came when she mashed up David Bowie’s Fashion with her slinky anthem Slow. Standing triumphantly over a pile of motionless male dancers in pink blazers and kilts, Kylie — rocking a white bodysuit — looked every inch the icon. Next stop, Glastonbury.

The London gigs you absolutely have to see in 2019
