Anyone who’s seen low-key Irish indie-musical film Once will know that folk singer Glen Hansard has an ear for a heart-breaking, soul-warming tune, and an earthy, emotive voice to match.

Hansard – who starred in and wrote much of the music for Once, winning Best Original Song at the Oscars for Falling Slowly – has returned with his second solo album Didn’t He Ramble, a critically-acclaimed collection that sees the singer move into more soul and blues-inflected territory.

Take an exclusive look at the behind-the-scenes video for new single Her Mercy, offering an insight into Hansard recording in Wilco’s studio The Loft in Chicago.

The clip also captures the expansive sights of the Windy City where the first recording session for the album took place.

Director Myles O’Reilly attended the recording session, capturing the passion and energy in the room as Hansard performed the track.

In keeping with the crisp, clear Transatlantic imagery, the song features a heartening blend of Hansard’s wrenching vocals, blasting horns, and the soulful overtones of a gospel choir – a striking indication of the stirring new direction that Hansard has explored on his latest LP.
