George Michael - Fantasy review: 'A fun way to start a journey that could see Michael being more prolific now than he was in life'

Chris Evans’s promise to play “a brand new George Michael song” on Radio 2 this morning wasn’t quite what it seemed. News that he would be playing a reworked B-side from 1990, Fantasy, might have been anticipated with a more diminished thrill.

The song first joined single Freedom! ’90, and was on a 1998 greatest hits collection and 2006’s Twenty Five.

But it should be unfamiliar enough to sound new to all but the most dedicated fans. The remix is by pop genius Nile Rodgers of Chic, who despite today admitting to “mixed feelings” about it, gives it a very bright lick of paint.

While the original was characterised by synthesized horns, Rodgers brings it closer to modern sounds with a computerised vocal effect. His rhythmic guitar work recalls the stuttering movement of Michael’s 1987 hit, Faith.

The first posthumous words from Michael, who died last Christmas aged 53, might have been expected to be more akin to mournful A Different Corner, which Chris Martin performed in tribute at the Brits.

This is a party tune, which expresses frustration at being treated badly by his “little baby”, but never leaves the dancefloor.

According to his sisters Yioda and Melanie, this could be the first of many legacy releases.

It’s a fun way to start a journey that could well see Michael being more prolific now than he was in life.
