The guitar George Harrison played during his final performance at the Cavern Club is going up for auction later this year.

The Maton Mastersound MS-500 played by the legendary musician is expected to sell for $500,000 (£386,000).

The former Beatles guitarist performed a number of Beatles shows with the guitar, including the final gig at the iconic Liverpool venue in 1963.

While it wasn’t Harrison’s regular instrument, it was used as a replacement while his Gretsch Country Gentleman was being taken in for repair.

UK auctioneer Gardiner Houlgate is selling the guitar at the auction, which takes place between September 12-13.

It was previously sold at Sotheby’s in 2002 and it featured in Liverpool’s the Beatles Story museum since 2014.

An amplifier used by Pink Floyd and a guitar previously owned by the Bee Gees’ Maurice Gibb are also being sold at the auction.

It’s the most recent unusual piece of rock memorabilia to go to auction, after it was announced David Bowie’s earliest known studio recording is being sold later this year.

The tape was unearthed in bizarre circumstances, having being found in a bread basket three decades after being recorded.
