COLDCUT X ON-U SOUND, Outside the Echo Chamber review: ‘From big beats to souped-up Sixties Bollywood’

New offering: There's a 'satisfying coherence' to the latest record
Andre Paine19 May 2017

Experience counts on Coldcut’s latest album, which marks 30 years of inventive electronic music.

This time the duo have teamed up with Adrian Sherwood of dub label On-U Sound — clubbing cross-pollination that will feel significant for vinyl trainspotters.

The guest line-up also has its share of veterans, including 81-year-old Lee “Scratch” Perry, session musicians from Grandmaster Flash’s The Message and Roots Manuva, who brings his rich, mystical rhymes to the lumbering groove of Vitals.

The record ranges from shimmering synth instrumentals and big beats to souped-up Sixties Bollywood. Yet there’s a satisfying coherence to the stew of dance, reggae and hip-hop as these seasoned producers draw on decades of global influences.

It’s multicultural electronic music for people turned off by all those EDM DJs clogging up the charts.
