"Inspiring”: Katherine Jenkins is set to perform with the choir of bereaved children at London Palladium next month

Katherine Jenkins is preparing for an emotional night when she performs with a choir of bereaved children in London.

The internationally renowned mezzo-soprano will sing a special version of new track Jealous Of The Angels with a choir from children’s bereavement charity, Grief Encounter. The one-off performance at London Palladium will form part of her UK tour.

Choir members are children who have lost parents or siblings at a young age, including several who lost family in the Grenfell Tower disaster. The group of under-16s feature on the track from Jenkins’s latest album, Guiding Light, and joined the singer for a recording session in Islington last November, before sharing their stories with the mother-of-two over pizza.

The 38-year-old, who lost her father to cancer at 15, told the Standard she cried after meeting them.

She said: “I pretty much guarantee there won’t be a dry eye in the house when these children come up on stage, because when I think about that afternoon with them … I went home and I sobbed about it, because they were so incredible.

“They were so inspiring, these little, gorgeous children, just to see their enthusiasm and their strength and the way they bounce back in such an amazing way. I’m really thrilled they will be on stage with me.”

Jenkins lives in London with her American husband, the artist and director Andrew Levitas, and their daughter Aaliyah, three, and son Xander, one.

The Palladium performance is part of her An Evening With Katherine Jenkins tour. She stopped touring four years ago to raise her children but is returning to stage this month.

The tour kicks off in Oxford on April 26 and arrives at London Palladium on May 18.
