Islamophobia Awareness Month: Queer cabaret in aid of LGBT+ Against Islamophobia comes to London

Amy Ashenden18 November 2016

A queer cabaret show in aid of support group LGBT+ Against Islamophobia is coming to London for three performances during Islamophobia Awareness Month.

The ‘all-singing, all-dancing’ comedy cabaret is set to confront ‘a variety of much darker, painful, and difficult themes’ intended to spark discussion on prejudice and current politics.

The LGBT+ Against Islamophobia group, which was created ‘in solidarity with Muslim communities under attack’, has marched at various Pride events across the UK this year and aims to support lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Muslims.

Cast member Usmann Rana said the show comes at an important time: “There is a sharp increase in Islamophobia, and Homophobia is still rife.

Performers Moan Ah, Merrill Rauch, LaAerial, Usmann Rana and Sami Cee as ‘Texas’, Bobby, Victor, ‘Lulu’ and ‘Rosie’

“LGBT+ Against Islamophobia is acting as a bridge between two misunderstood and demonized communities to show common grounds that unite us through unapologetic political art as an instrument.”

Director Dani Singer said: “We decided to perform Cabaret as a way to reach people – those most distant from politics.

“Cabaret has such power as a tool for communication, and with our wonderful cast of activists from all walks of life, I think we’re making a new point in a way everyone can relate to.”
