The country has a new art teacher – Grayson Perry, whose new show on Channel 4 will open up art to the nation.

The Turner Prize-winning artist’s programme, Grayson’s Art Club, which begins on Channel 4 next week, hopes to bring professional, amateur and first-time artists together, as a tonic against isolation.

He said: “I look forward to inviting the nation into my studio for Grayson’s Art Club. This series will be as much an act of spontaneous creativity as the stuff that usually happens here. I hope we can make something uplifting in response to the crisis.

“It should be inspiring, fun, full of helpful tips to get the nation making art – and maybe a bit poignant.”

Here’s everything to know about the show:

When is Grayson’s Art Club on the TV?

The first episode of Grayson’s Art Club will air on Monday April 27 at 8pm on Channel 4, and then at the same time every week. It was originally scheduled for the previous week, but due to an illness (not coronavirus) Perry had to postpone.

What is the show about?

Perry will host the programme from his studio, show us how he works and speak to other artists and celebrity guests about how they are spending their time in isolation.

He will also be encouraging viewers to use their time in isolation to harness their creativity. Each episode will have a theme, in which he will teach us some techniques to unleash our own inner artists. The first week’s theme is portraits, and the second is animals. He is asking for submissions from the public to showcase in each episode.

How can I get involved?

In line with each week’s theme, Perry is asking for submissions from the audience. The submission window for episode one is closed, but you can still send something in for the second, on the theme of animals.

Any type of art is allowed – painting, drawing, sculpture, video, collage and more – from both amateurs and professionals. All you have to do is take photographs of the artwork and film a short video (less than three minutes) talking about why and how you made it and how you feel about creating art in lockdown. Those under 18 will need a parent or guardian to submit on their behalf.
