Sony has announced the titles coming to PlayStation Plus in April as part of its Monthly Games plan — including an entry from the Minecraft family.

These are the games made available to all tiers of PlayStation Plus members. Once you claim them, you can access them as long as your membership is active.

You can download these from Tuesday, April 2 until Monday, May 6. And, as ever, this means it’s your last chance to claim March’s games

But what will replace Destiny 2: Witch Queen, Sifu, Hello Neighbor 2, and EA Sports F1 23?

We get just three games next month, but all are interesting. They are Minecraft Legends, Immortals of Aveum, and Skul: The Hero Slayer.

PlayStation Plus members can also claim a free “Overwatch 2 Mega Bundle,” including several character skins and Battle Pass Tier Skips. If none of that means anything to you, let’s focus on the “free” games. Here’s a closer look at them.

Immortals of Aveum, available for PlayStation 5 only, was a flop when it launched in August 2023. But it’s a lot of fun and shouldn’t be missed by anyone who has enjoyed a shooter game.

You wield magic instead of guns — and there’s much more story here than in the purist “boomer” shooters that have become popular in recent years by evoking the early FPS games of the 90s. This is more like a trip back to the mid-2000s, stripping back some of today’s overplayed mechanics to get to the fun. Here’s our review.

Next up, Minecraft Legends is a strategy game. It doesn’t quite play like standard Minecraft, but borrows its visual style and creatures, and you still use blocks to construct defensive structures.

This is Minecraft as a light and approachable war game, in which you have to fight off invading Piglins. The PEGI ratings board has certified this one as “suitable for ages 7 and over” if you’re wondering whether it suits the kids.

Skul: The Hero Slayer is comfortably the best-reviewed of April’s PlayStation Plus Monthly Games, earning an average score of 80% at Metacritic. But we’ve saved it for last as it’s also this month’s indie-tastic pick and comes from South Korean developer SouthPaw Games.

In the vein of Rogue Legacy or Dead Cells, Skul involves you jumping around a pixel art world, slashing up the place. You won’t win on first attempt (or maybe even your 50th). But the generated levels and randomised item drops mean you get a different experience every time you play.
