Amazon Games has announced a closed beta for its upcoming massively multiplayer online (MMO) PC game New World.

The closed beta testing phase is set to begin on July 23. The news was announced alongside a new gameplay trailer over the weekend during the PC Gaming Show.

New World will launch globally for PC on August 25, 2020. It is unclear if it will have a subscription service or if players are only required to purchase the game.

The open-world MMO will see players navigate the fictitious world of Aeternum, a mysterious island where a player will need the ability to conquer not only rival players but the classic MMO enemies as well.

According to Amazon Games, New World will set itself apart from other MMOs with more of a focus on large-scale PvP battles.

There will be fortress sieges against other players and supernatural invasions featuring 100 players on the battlefield at once.

Players can band together to form Companies operating out of fortified strongholds, or play alone and acquire and customise their own homes as they contribute to the growth of the larger community around them.

Whilst Amazon Games' first try with Crucible left a lot to be desired, there could be a good niche here for New World, especially with the PvP-focused mechanics and features. But, this sort of thing has been done well in Guild Wars 2, which is a free-to-play MMO.

New World is being developed at Amazon Games’ development studio in California, by a team who have experience working on games including Destiny, World of Warcraft, and Everquest.

How to sign up to New World closed beta

People who pre-order the game gain instant access to the closed beta when it happens in July, plus in-game rewards.

Alternatively, for a chance to get access to the closed beta without pre-ordering the game, you can sign up here, via the game's website. Just use your Amazon login and you're ready to go.

If you want to try out the game before committing to it then gaining access to the beta is a good way of doing so.

New World will launch on August 25, 2020. To pre-order New World visit the official website here.
