If you want to know which games are truly the best, ask the people who work on them.

That’s what you get with the DICE Awards, where a fraternity of video game professionals vote for their top titles of the past year. As such, it’s no wonder the ceremony is described as the ‘Oscars of gaming’.

Last night in Las Vegas, this year’s winners were announced and two games dominated the proceedings. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3 took home 11 awards between them, continuing their excellent awards season run

Despite their domination, the two games couldn’t be further apart. One is a cinematic action spectacle based on a comic book character. The other is a Dungeons and Dragons-inspired fantasy role-playing game (RPG) with deep character customisation and tactical combat.

All told, Spider-Man 2 nabbed more silverware than its rival, with six gongs in total, among them action game of the year, outstanding achievement in animation, and outstanding achievement in character. The game was released exclusively on the PlayStation 5 last September by Sony-owned studio Insomniac Games.

Meanwhile, Baldur’s Gate 3 won the coveted Game of the Year award, repeating its feat from last year’s The Game Awards. It also took home trophies for story, game direction and game design, as well as RPG of the year.

Once Baldur’s Gate 3 and Spidey were done, there wasn’t much left for the rest of the pack. Still, a variety of games won prizes in their respective genres: Street Fighter 6 nabbed fighting game of the year, Xbox exclusive Forza Motorsport was crowned racing game of the year, and Cocoon won the award for top indie game. The latter is currently available on Xbox Game Pass, the subscription service that lets you play games on Xbox consoles, laptops and mobile.

Not to be left out, Nintendo also scooped a couple of awards thanks to its two biggest games of last year. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder won Best Adventure and Best Family Game, respectively.

Now on its 27th show, the DICE Awards have been rewarding excellent games since the days of the PS1 and Nintendo 64. Winners are determined by the 30,000 industry insiders who make up the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences.
