Bungie details the future of Destiny 2, revealing three expansions

Destiny 2 will continue to be supported through to 2022

The future of Destiny 2 has been laid out by Bungie, promising the game will have no sequels but continue as a live service.

There will be three major expansions coming to the game all the way through to 2022, according to the new roadmap.

Bungie detailed the content coming to its ever-growing shooter Destiny 2 on Tuesday in a Twitch live stream filled with information about the game, updates coming this autumn and continued support for the live service once Sony's and Microsoft's new consoles arrive.

You can rest assured that the game will continue to be supported by three major expansions, which will be released from now until 2022.

Destiny 2 and its subsequent updates have followed the same formula as the first game. Typically, there are smaller updates through each year all culminating in a big expansion released around autumn. Destiny 2, which was first launched in 2017, has had two big autumn expansions and an evolving seasonal update model.

Game director at Bungie, Luke Smith, announced that Destiny 2 will see the Beyond Light expansion in autumn, releasing on September 22nd.

This expansion will be followed by The Witch Queen in 2021 and then Lightfall in 2022. Those latter two expansions have no release date, but let's guess autumn for now.

Beyond Light will be sending players to the frozen moon of Europa, where players will learn to harness the 'Darkness' via stasis and unearth new gear.

"Beneath the ruins lie countless relics, an arsenal of weapons, and more. Claim this cutting-edge tech from the clutches of time and dare to tame the wasteland", reads the game's official website.

It also has been confirmed that a sequel – Destiny 3 – is not on the cards, at least for now. When quizzed on the chances of another sequel to Destiny, Luke Smith said: "We're not planning to make one".

Along with news of all these expansions on the horizon, Bungie also launched Season 11 of Destiny 2 today, the Season of Arrivals.

The latest season is live across all major platforms now and will include a dungeon which goes live later this evening, with story quests and activities which will begin to lay the groundwork for transitioning to the next expansion.

Bungie also announced in the live stream that Destiny 2 would be supported on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles, promising 4K graphics and running in 60fps.

Not only that, but Bungie is allowing free upgrades for people who own the game on the PS4 and Xbox One.
