Top Gun for the techno age

Jamie Foxx stars in Stealth

Rob Cohen, who made the less than wonderful XXX, tackles the USAF here, as three ace pilots have to "prosecute with precision" a rogue pilotless plane, intent on causing the Third World War.

No doubt the digitally manufactured aerial photography will thrill those who liked Top Gun, but I'll bet the script didn't enthuse the three good actors who have to whoosh noisily across Alaska, North Korea and Asia in pursuit of their renegade prey.

Jamie Foxx, Jessica Beal and Josh Lucas go to it with a will - but where there's a will there's certainly not a way around dialogue such as: "We've got a nuclear crisis on our hands, Ben. Here's the brief."

The pilotless plane (which talks to the three pilots, and even apologises for its errant behaviour), is one of those supercool killing machines that you come across in video games.

Nicknamed Edi (Extreme Deep Invader), it's at least as colourful as any of the other characters. But even if you like the gung-ho technological display, you'll find the plot increasingly far-fetched and the aerial stunts a little samey.

Thrilling in parts, but $100 million of war porn just the same.
