Who’ll get the girl? left to right, Tom Hardy and Chris Pine compete for Reese Withewrspoon’s affections
2 March 2012

Chris Pine and Tom Hardy compete for Reese Witherspoon in this buddy-buddy movie. The two handsome hunks are (improbably) the world’s best spies. So in between fighting for Witherspoon’s affections they do Bond-like stunts at the behest of the CIA. She is a top executive (again improbable) but hopeless with men.

What we get is some smartish dialogue, stunts which at least attempt parodies of the spy genre and an ironic view of the eternal battle between men and women. What we don’t get is the feeling that the film progresses from its passable start towards a decent finish. Halfway through it is treading water. Pine and Hardy do their level best to convince and Witherspoon cavorts the light fantastic with as much flourish as she can muster.
