The King of Marvin Gardens - film review

A cult classic about fading dreams that has curiously improved with age
24 May 2013

Bob Rafelson's follow-up to Five Easy Pieces is a cult classic about fading dreams that has curiously improved with age.

Two brothers (Jack Nicholson and Bruce Dern) obsess about the past and future in a rotting Atlantic City hotel, interrupted by fireworks from gangsters, concierges and would-be and one-time lovers. Nicholson is in fine, sombre form but Dern is a revelation. His Jason is spiteful, deluded, smart, heartbroken ... It’s possible to see shades of this maniac in a multitude of modern icons, from Seinfeld’s Kramer to Rushmore’s Max Fischer. Jason is dead. Long live Jason!
