The Ice Age goes 3D

Jaws of doom: Scrat the Weasel encounters a hungry dinosaur
10 April 2012

Here we go again, frolicking with a band of furry and cuddleworthy animals while well-known humans like Queen Latifah, John Leguizamo and our own Simon Pegg squawk away merrily, doubtless appreciating this heaven-sent method of improving their bank balances. Only this time it’s all in 3D.

Though there’s not much of a story, the animation is expert and imaginative — such as the dance that a female aardvark does to attract her lustful admirer. As usual, the pratfalls are splendid and, considering this is the third of the series, the makers clearly still have some inspiration left.

This one is subtitled Dawn of the Dinosaurs and has the familiar heroes dumped from their Ice Age quarters into a summery world where carnivorous plants and massive dinos await their next meal.

Manny the mammoth, Sid the sloth, Diego the sabre-toothed tiger and possums Crash and Eddie have to run for their lives, and are eventually led to safety by a daredevil weasel called Scrat.

The moral of the tale, insofar as it has one, is that we all need friends and no man is an island. But don’t worry about that. Just sit back and hope the kids aren’t restless.
