Hollywood hardly shied from 2016’s penchant for controversy: #OscarsSoWhite put race right at the forefront of every Academy Award conversation, the gender pay gap persists and Hugh Grant even picked up an award in recognition of his acting.

Elsewhere, dullard Milo Yiannopoulos’s scathing criticism of Ghostbusters and lazy, unoriginal comments about its star Leslie Jones somehow whipped his legions of sycophants to racially abuse the actress, leaving him permanently blocked from the social network and her deeply upset. How did such a boring man get so famous?

Superheroes, remakes and sequels reigned supreme this year, with Captain America: Civil War coming in as the highest grossing film of the year, while The Jungle Book, Bridget Jones’s Baby and Finding Dory all cashed in a big way at the box office. British hit I, Daniel Blake stirred a fresh conversation around benefits, while the Sad Affleck meme prompted more than a few to (jokingly) wonder how tough life is at the other end of the scale.

Sean Penn might have won two Oscars during his career, but it felt like this year his acting chops were really on show: he somehow managed a voice-over for Terence in Angry Birds, a character who doesn’t speak.

Give our quizbelow a go if you’re feeling like a bit of a film buff, or just spent too long in cinemas praying for 2016 to hurry up and finish.
