The Calling is a low-budget tale

10 April 2012

Jan Dunn follows Gypo and Ruby Blue with the low-budget tale of a young woman (Emily Beecham) who decides, to her boyfriend’s horror, to become a novitiate Benedictine nun. Once at the convent, she gets a shock. Her novice sister (splendid Brenda Blethyn) is as politically incorrect as a nun can get, Mother Superior (Susannah York) is batty, and the nun in charge of the vineyard (Rita Tushingham) is a football fan and lush. It’s nice to see familiar veterans go to it with a will — even if the script could be sharper and the benefits of prayer are not always apparent.
