Tangled 3D is a fairytale with simple pleasures

10 April 2012

Disney's take on Rapunzel begins with one of those smarmy Hollywood voices telling us the story before it starts. The beautiful heroine (voiced by Mandy Moore) is locked in a tower by her wicked step-mother (Donna Murphy), all because her long, uncut hair hides the secret of eternal youth. Our heroine manages to strike a deal with a fellow prisoner, Flynn Rider (Zachary Levi). She'll set him free if he helps her escape.

That's roughly the story of this old-fashioned but charming animated feature, which includes a talking chameleon, a grumpy police horse and songs from Alan Menken and Glenn Slater which remind you of crying through Dumbo or Bambi as a child. The 3D doesn't make much of a difference - more important is the effort the film-makers have made to define their characters. If this is what old-fashioned means, then bring it on.
