Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has clung to the top spot at the US box office for a second consecutive weekend.

The dark remake of Roald Dahl's beloved classic, which opens in the UK on Friday, has so far taken £65.6 million (114.1 million dollars) in America.

It held off competition from Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson's raunchy comedy Wedding Crashers, which stood firm in second place.

Ewan McGregor's new thriller The Island failed to make waves, opening at No 4, behind the Fantastic Four comic book superheroes.

The action flick about clones on the run cost £69 million (120 million dollars) to produce.

Jim Tharp, head of distribution at DreamWorks, said: "Clearly, it's a disappointing opening. We can only hope the film finds its audience in the next few weeks."

Bad New Bears, starring Billy Bob Thornton as a sports team coach, debuted in fifth place.

Meanwhile, the sleeper hit of the summer, March of the Penguins, cracked the top 10.

The Antarctic documentary, narrated by Morgan Freeman, has won rave reviews and packed cinemas despite competing with big budget Hollywood blockbusters such as Batman Begins.

Steven Spielberg's blockbuster War Of The Worlds has become the second biggest film of the year in North America, closing in on Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

The Tom Cruise film, based on the HG Wells' 1897 classic, has taken £118.7 million (208.3 million dollars) so far, while Star Wars has reached £214 million (376 million dollars).
