Stripped of a plot

Paris Hilton gets to bare all in House of Wax

Though far from measuring up to the gloriously camp 3-D Vincent Price original of 1953, Jaume-Collet Serra's very different adaptation has a certain amount of intentional comedy, and a strip from Paris Hilton to keep the rest of us happy.

The plot has little to it: a ghastly ghoul murders youngsters one by one, in and around a house that is made of wax and thus melts nicely when exposed to fire.

The cast includes Elisha Cuthbert, Chad Michael Murray and Brian Van Holt, who go to it with a will but without much of a script.

It was ever thus, but at least Serra's debut feature is reasonably assured and doesn't look too much like the commercials he used to make.
